at what's happening in florida, what's happening in ohio, part of what's making romney's job more conflicted is they're doing a pretty good job. scott walker has things moving. if you look at mitch daniels, maybe the model for intelligent, effective reform at the state level. there are a the love reasons to believe the underlying system is healthier than washington. my point is, whoever the winner is should put on their scheduled that half their time from that date to the inaugural is spent with all the members of the opposition party, not the leadership, but listenly literally to all the members -- if romney wins he needs to listen to democrats. if obama wins he needs to listen to republicans. they have to reestablish human ties in order to have a genuine opportunity for real compromise. >> they also need to listen to the country, because if you read polls from the country, 80% of the people will say lobbyists have too much power, and 65% of the people will say raise the tax rates at the top. they'll say spend more money on jobs and education. and things like that. so washington'

will come down to one thing, if governor romney explains that his plan to get jobs going is no different than my race in 2010. all i talked about what i would do to turn the economy around. it worked. unemployment has dropped faster than any other state. down 2.3 percent. last month, we were second to texas in job creation. my competition is governor perry. if he talks jobs, governor romney, he will do well. that is the biggest issue in our country. clearly, it is an issue in florida. we have done well but we still have people unemployed. a lot better than what we were but we still have a lot of work. >>neil: you reminded me at the convention and other times we have chatted, polls are fleeting and fickle. but it is interesting to me that in some of the states, swing states, the president made inroads and it could change over night. if -- in ohio, in michigan, in wisconsin, all the republican governors, all practicing turn arounds, all utilizing policies that would appear to be anathema to president obama but now the benefit seems to go to...president obama. >>guest: it is incumbent upon

approval rating, romney favorability, and who wins on the economy. in three states, the president had a job approval rating of 49 or above. romney's unfavorable rating was higher than his favorable rating, and the president led romney on the economy. in three of those stays, iowa, ohio, new hampshire. just one state did you have the president's job approval rating 48% or over and romney winning on the issue of the economy. that's north carolina. if you look at it that way and go to the map to 270, what does that mean, and you put those four states into the respective categories, and look at. this the president for suur sho. romney a long way to go has to sweep the rest. there are five left in the background. florida, virginia, wisconsin, colorado, nevada. this is where if romney does do what chris christie said he will do, the first place you'll see it are in the five states that are left. >> ralph reed, that's a lot of movement that has to take place to overcome where the campaign is. yet you heard chris christie say it this morning on the program, we'll have a new dynamic come thursday mo

on job creation haven't gotten us back to work. 8% unemployment for 43 months. i mean what mitt romney said very specifically on job creation, is expanded trade by reducing the barriers, creating a better climate for america by keeping tax and regulatory policies in a better shape, energy. this president has been horrific we just lost 1200 coal jobs in virginia last week because of the regulatory policies of the obama administration, what the president of the company said. i think they've been specific on the types of things that they would do to be able to increase jobs, provide more access to the american dream, and tough decisions have to be made. i cut spending in virginia about $6 billion eliminating deficits. republican governors have done it all over the country. sure there was some complaining and hardship at the beginning but we're running surpluses and the job rates in red states are better than blue states and that's what mitt romney will do. >> he's been specific about his goals. he hasn't been specific about how to reach those goals. what about what paul ryan acknowledged

is not being held to that same standard, the example they bring up is that the president says 1 million jobs -- mitt romney said 12 million and he has not explained but nevertheless, they see this is not equal treatment. when the president is on stage domestic policy, will he be under more fire to talk about the direction of the country because the responsibility and the onus right now is on him being the incumbent? >> i mean, absolutely. here's the reality. if you look at this in terms of, you know, what i think is going to end up happening in this debate, both candidates are going to force -- are going to be forced to answer the gaps if you will. i think the difference is, romney's gaps are the size of the grand canyon. the president i think has laid out pretty clear specific agenda in terms of where he wants to go. plus he has a record that he can go back to. he has a record he has to defend. but romney's problem is, this incredible reluctance to give any details about the loopholes or whatever it might be in terms of his tax plan or any of his other proposals and that i think creates a m
